The CDP set out to give marketers one place to understand and act on every customer. The idea was right. The delivery model wasn't.

In Part 1, I argued that the CEAL is coming. To see why, start with what it replaces.

Peak MarTech

The 2026 MarTech landscape counted 15,505 products, up just 121 - the flattest year in its 15-year history. Underneath that flat line, 1,488 products arrived and 1,367 left. The market is churning and consolidating, not growing.

The CDP has stopped growing

The CDP Institute's latest update put organic employment growth across the industry at 1.3%. Composable, warehouse-native vendors grew 7.8%.

Bar chart: organic employment growth, CDP Institute January 2026. CDP industry overall 1.3%, delivery and campaign CDPs 3.3%, composable warehouse-native 7.8%.

The forecasts are cooling too. MarketsandMarkets cut its CDP growth forecast from 30.7% a year to 13.8% between its 2025 and 2026 editions. And the CDP fell from 26.9% to 17.4% as the core of B2C martech stacks, as its job moved into the warehouse below and the engagement layer above.

Budgets are tightening around it. Martech took 19.4% of marketing budgets in 2026, a five-year low, while 15.3% now goes to AI.

The UI was the bottleneck

The real problem was never the data. A UK audit of 2,400 marketers found an average of 121 tools, with only 34.1% actively used in a given month. Gartner puts martech utilisation at 49%. Braze's 2026 survey found nearly half of marketing executives lack the tools to orchestrate across channels.

Every new platform brought another interface to learn, another set of power users to protect and another integration to maintain. The CDP couldn't escape that, because it was one more interface itself.

So the CDP isn't dying because the problem it set out to solve went away. It's dying because agents can finally solve it properly.

About this series. From CDP to CEAL is an eight-part series by Kristina Kalpokaite, Head of MarTech at Loop Horizon, on how AI agents will replace the interfaces of marketing technology. Start with Part 1, The CEAL is coming. The full white paper, with every source, is coming soon.

Next: Part 3 - What the CEAL looks like.
