For a decade, the customer data platform promised marketers one view of the customer and one place to act on it. Agents are about to deliver it. This series explains how.

The CDP set out to give marketers a seamless way to understand every customer and activate across every channel from one place. Most enterprises got the first half. The second half never quite arrived, because every platform came with another interface to learn, another integration to maintain and another set of power users to protect. Adoption, not data, became the constraint.

That is about to change. Over the next three to five years, I expect marketers to stop operating platforms and start briefing agents: building campaigns, journeys and content in conversation, while agents carry out the work across every channel and report back. The interfaces we've spent a decade learning will matter less and less, and then not at all.

I call the layer that makes this happen the CEAL - the Customer Engagement Agent Layer (pronounced "seal"). It sits between a brand's own data and every channel, and it seals the gaps in the customer journey that the CDP left open.

It's already happening

I'm not the only one who sees it coming:

The numbers point the same way. The martech landscape grew just 0.79% in 2026, with 1,488 products added and 1,367 removed. Organic CDP employment grew 1.3%, against 7.8% for warehouse-native vendors. And MCP, the open standard that lets agents operate platforms, already has more than 950 servers in Claude's connector directory alone.

What this series covers

Over the next seven parts, I'll set out the case one piece at a time:

  1. The CEAL is coming - you are here
  2. Why the CDP never delivered
  3. What the CEAL looks like
  4. Every platform is going headless
  5. Buying for the agentic era
  6. Your people
  7. The curve, and what to buy for 2027
  8. Where it ends up

Each one is a short read. The full argument, with every source, is in the white paper From CDP to CEAL: the agentic future of marketing technology, coming soon.

Next: Part 2 - Why the CDP never delivered.
